Ohio Is For Lovers!
Just a short post here. To be honest I don’t know what to tell everyone I didn’t say last time. The work is still suiting me well and, whilst I’m severely lacking in the company department a fair bit, I’m gettin’ on ok. So, the reason for this post; Matt and Dani are leaving for the States tomorrow. A 2 week stay back home for Matt’s sister Rebekah’s wedding in Cincinnati on November 24th!
BEKA and JAKE
CONGRATULATIONS!
Sorry I couldn’t accept your invitation too. It would have been great to come and see everyone again, ‘specially as last time I only got 2 days! But alas, my contract won’t allow for personal holiday during the first 6 months and I’m kinda needing to keep the spending down right now! I very much appreciate that you invited me none the less. Thanks guys and all the best!
I kinda feel I’d like to offer a subject of discussion here now. So, for the Japanese-savy amongst you guys please cast your eyes over this much-quoted line from Star Wars in my 1st comment to myself! I have translated it into Japanese, tell me what you think. Robin and Balex will probably destroy it but I thought I’d try translating some Star Wars dialogue in one of my free periods yesterday and thought it could be good for my learning experience if my use of grammar were put under scrutiny. Have at it!Discuss! Later all! “…so I can fall asleep tonight, or die…”

委員会では侵入について話し合っている中、国民の苦痛,死亡を拝見するためには,こちらへ参る目的ではありません。
good I guess… I’m a bit scatterbrained right now but I have 2 suggestions for alternate translations.
1. こちらに参ったのは、この委員会が侵入について討議すると共に私が星民の苦痛と死亡を拝見するためではありません。
2.この委員会が侵入について討議すると共に私は星民の苦痛と死亡を拝見するつもりはあらません。
The first one is closer to the original but the second packs more of a punch. I like 討議する over 話し合う because it conveys more of a sense of a debate rather than discussing the weather over tea. と共に is nice because its 2kyu grammar and also very precise. I wouldn’t use 中 in that situation, although 間 or と同時に work ok. I also invented the word 星民 because I think it conveys a better sense of hte situation than 国民。
i dont really know the original sentence , but debate=‹c˜_‚·‚é@might be more natural.
we use ‹c˜_ a lot.
Thanks, Dave! Wish you could be here for all the excitement!
Uh-oh… I might be granting a small victory to Murakami-sensei by saying:
討論するわけにはいけません
or even:
ここに討論してたまるわけではありません!
Point conceded, Murakami’s ‘wake’ training.
thanks davey!
i’m sorry you can’t make it, but i’m sure you’ll get back to the u.s. one of these days.
I wish I could read what mizsea said.
To Balex, I was considering using ‘wake’ but obviously didn’t have your superior Murakami training
oops, i wrote GIRON= debate.
thanks mizsea. it went 文字化け on me. I never know what to use between 議論、討議 and 討論. I just went with my gut and used 討議. I see Alex used 討論. Interesting that we have had all 3 in this thread.
The example sentences in my 電子辞書 have me tending more towards 議論, now, particularly because they include a reference to discussing things in the seeeeenate! Thank you Dave for facilitating this lively 議論. I hope that such example sentences will become a standard feature of your updates.
I must also add that, in discussion with Robin earlier, I decided N“ü‚ð„‚Á‚Ä‹c˜_ as a more “dramatic” alternative to N“ü‚ɂ‚¢‚Ä…
dave has also gone mojibake on me. If I hadn’t already discussed it with him I wouldn’t know what he said.
indeed, it is too bad that you couldn’t have joined us. it’s also too bad that i can’t read any non-roman characters on my mom’s compooper. guess i’ll have to come back and look when i get back to toki.
thanks, dave!
my birthday will be wonderful because i get to spend some time with matt!
hope you are doing well.
^_^
I like star wars.
I still don’t understand it much.
haha
so how are you are?
-Stacey-
Yes it is very bright!
I have probably asked this before but, what do you work as?
I want a job, but since I am still in school, it will have to be part time.
It would probably be fast food to.
I am willing to wark anywhere.
There is only one place around here that hire’s 15 year olds..
Pizza Hut. I do not want to work there, I heard the manager is a jerk.
When I turn 16. [2 months and 1 day]
I will get a job, hopefully.
anyways
ttyl
-Stacey-
now that you told me that, i believe you have told me that before.
haha
anyways
have you seen my video?
Why do you ask if i want to do ‘Music/performing arts at university..’ or something like that?
Like what do you mean; singing?
idk =S
Thats a good idea, I mean I do like to write, and to sing.. But i’m not very well at either.
I have been writing since the 4th grade, and singing all my life..
But like I said I am still not very well at them.
=/
you hit the nail on the head, bud. haha. thanks. and, yeah, i don’t know how many times i’ve heard that speech or even given it to myself, but sometimes we can get a little too stuck in a moment and don’t want or have the energy (or are too scared) to look very far forward.
i notice you haven’t updated much, either. hopefully you’re not feeling too isolated there in japan?
about your last post…i think i’m beginning to be one of those that talks all about work, too. i don’t like it. doesn’t help when that’s all people ask me about, though.
hidey hoe!
HAPPY NEW YEAR, DAVE!
